ART CROSSING MOON RIVER

Wider than a mile..
     crossed borders with her artistry.
Dream maker..
a "small" person who realized HUGE dreams against all odds and totally on her own.
Heart breaker..
loved and hated..she fell, tumbled and pained a lot of hearts, including ours.
But no matter, wherever you're going, we're going your way..
we will be here to support you always.
The rainbow's end is waiting for you..
      keep the faith..
      we love you, Moon River.

HOW DO WE MAKE SURE NORA AUNOR WILL BE "IT" IN HISTORY?

(re-posted: written October 2006)

A question that warrants a long pause.  Medyo mahirap sagutin ito without being emotional.  So I will try hard to be objective.

The Nora-Vilma rivalry is like a grand telenovela, parang walang katapusan, laging may extension.  But like anything, one day it will end and this long lasting rivalry must settle for only ONE WINNER – no more TIES when the closing credits are shown.

Sad but true, powerful and influential people usually gets the upper hand and can manipulate and/or distort history for reasons beyond being true and honest.  So what can we do to make sure that the TRUE WINNER emerges.

Looking back at history (both local and global), the people who made it to the books are not necessarily the ones who are good-natured.  In most cases the more famous people were those who STOOD OUT, the ones who MADE THE DIFFERENCE.  Nora Aunor is both and we all know this.  The KEY is to make other people aware of this especially the young people who did not get the opportunity to witness the Nora Aunor spectacle.

Of course, the quest will be a lot easier if Nora will continue to come up with more bravura projects that will earn her more critical acclaim, quality awards and recognition.  The more globally recognized the awards, the better.  Commercial but of quality value projects for box-office success and popularity boost will also be a welcome treat.  Wishful thinking?

The National Artist (NA) award has been tainted with political color but I believe it is still the highest recognition any Filipino artist can receive.  So the race to this award is critical and the one who gets it first will have the advantage.  Actually, the criteria for the NA award is very much the essence of making it to HISTORY so if Noranians will work together towards this, it could be hitting 2 birds with one stone.

Ideas…ideas…

1.  A Nora Aunor documentary with focus on the events and achievements only witnessed and made possible during the Nora Aunor heydays.  Everyone loves a fairy tale story so throw in Nora’s Cinderella-like rise to the top that made way to a very Filipino showbiz landscape.  There was a year when she made 18 movies plus TV and recording, what a record! (Considering it is probably just about the number of movies the mainstream productions produced in a year nowadays).  Spine tingling fan adulation (touches on the personal side - BKJ's book and old magazine articles have a lot of these extraordinary stories).  Footages or photos of her jampacked personal appearances, shows, concerts, not to mention the stampedes.  Airlifting to get through the crowd, her talk-of-the town debutante party.  "Mamera kay Nora" drive.  Komiks/mags with her on the cover week after week after week and even publication was named after her.  The more prominent other half in the most popular Guy & Pip tandem.  Maria Leonora Theresa, a doll of hers more famous than other known starlets.  Stints in Cannes, international awards and wasn’t she also a judge in one international acting derby?  What about her “inadequacies” and “misfortunes”?  Throw them in as well.  Recall of down and out, rise from the ashes events in Nora’s life will be inspirational.  Coming out triumphant even after the long Sampaguita vs Tower battle over her services.  BIR chases even during the wake of her brother.  The “last card” pronouncements that turned out to be all aces.  Remember Annie B, followed by Bongga Ka Day?  Flor Contemplacion? Her first record breaking concert.  And no one should forget the famous “Mamay mali ang hula nila” acceptance speech.  Even her recent US “outlaw” incident, throw that in.  She is still surviving and very much around doing shows in the US.  She is not totally down and out now, is she? Her taking in of 4 kids as her own even if some people say that she was not fit to be their mother.  How many of us would have done that?  It was an act of goodness no matter what.  Those kids needed a HOME and she provided that.  Who can say for sure that those kids would have been better off without Nora’s interference?  They are certainly not menace to society, are they?  And of course the most important of all, her ARTISTRY.  From the teeny-boppy no more than singing parts in her early movies, we saw her transformed to become an acting GREAT that she is now.  The girl borne out of the masses and made commercial movies that endeared herself to the masses is the same lady who in the process of improving her craft had raised the level of awareness of the masses and made them appreciate critically acclaimed quality movies, most of which she starred in herself.

And ETC. ETC. ETC. Sorry for the mumbles here.  I can go on and on but the idea is to make people realize that Nora Aunor is a phenomenon (they ain't seen anything like that yet and not anymore) and NO ONE ELSE comes close.

2.  A book/documentation of great people annotating whom the great artist/actressis with emphasis on the criteria somewhat similar to the National Artist award.  People who are well respected in their own fields and artists themselves attesting to ONE artist's brilliance will be very convincing.  I am confident that “IT” will be Nora for these people.  Past and present, non-living and living greats (habang buhay pa ang karamihan sa kanila).  Include National Artists Brocka and Bernal's comments, these are valuable.

3.  Use of modern technology for promotion of Nora’s artistry.  We’d like to see big number of Nora “hits” when someone (an aspiring actor maybe) googles or searches the Net for acting greatness.  More Nora on YouTube, websites, blogs, e-groups.  Someday, these will become source of history.

4.  Preservation of Nora’s recorded songs, movies, TV shows, concerts and stage plays videos, please.  We should be able to show (not just tell) the NORA history.

5. New song from the heart.  This is more of a "wish" rather than a "move to history". I wish that she will record again.  I'm not quite sure what type of song but something "magical".  It has to be original, puwedeng Tagalog o English though I much prefer Tagalog and composed just for her.  It will have that Nora's distinct voice but somehow has a different feel to it.  Nice melody for easy recall and has to have meaningful lyrics (not so obvious but definitely relating to her).  This song will be "hers" alone and will ease her way to the hearts of the Filipinos yet again.  It will be the RECORD of the year and the years to come.  Am I wishing for too much?  I can dream, can't I?  or should I just wake up?  Calling on the group's musical geniuses. There must be some here, I'm sure.

And more…  The race to history is on.

Fast forward to 2012 ...

A true Nora Aunor believer would most likely not entertain such question anymore. I can almost hear the echoes from my Noranian friends: "There is no rivalry!", "You gotta be kidding, what competition are you talking about?", "Puhhhlease, hindi sila magka-level, noh?". And I must say, I totally agree. Multimedia si Ate Guy whereas the rival is hmmm... medya-medya? tho in fairness to her, she is a "hardworking" celebrity, o sige na nga actress na rin. But Nora Aunor is not just a singer/actress. She is a phenomenon and a genuine artist! World-class, saan ka pa? During her US hiatus, she managed to be recognized by CNN with her film 'HIMALA'' cited as one of Asia's greatest films and eventually won the CNN APSA Viewers Choice Award.  CNN also sought her for a videotaped interview.  Not long after, she got another citation for 10 Best Asian Actress of the Decade in the 2010 Green Planet Awards for which she came on top. Nora Aunor made history again!

So can we end the "rivalry" now? Not so fast, I'm afraid. Outside the "Nora" world and whether we like it or not, Nora and Vilma are still the most enduring rivals. Unfortunately, it is an accepted perception more than a well-researched argument.

And here we go again.. The National Artist award remains elusive. More controversies besieged it instead. When will they see the light of day? I worry not. Who are they fooling anyway? They can commit the most unforgivable sin of omission for not bestowing it on Nora Aunor but for me, Nora Aunor (NA) is already one National Artist (NA). Should I say it once more? The acronymn suits perfectly!

I have faith and I believe that on "judgement day", HISTORY will be kind and honest.
NORA AUNOR is a legendary ICON. No rival. No other. Only her is THE ONE.

PS> My No. 5 wish has been granted the first time I listened to Ate Guy's 'Habang Panahon'. 'Hope to hear the golden voice real soon.. crossing fingers too for the new international movie.. Never stops.. NORA AUNOR keeps writing HISTORY!

Fast forward to 2013 ..

Finally, she comes home and did another miracle of a performance in 'Thy Womb'.
Nora Aunor received 4 (yes four!) international best actress awards for this film!
Whoah! What a record!

Fast forward to 2014 ...

Elsa statue in Ilocos .. glowing sureness in History! and more NA glory to come..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ATE GUY!
You are still the One @ Sixty One!

One of the Nora articles I read says:

"Nora represents the poor girl on the street that sang, danced and acted her way into the limelight. That is why so many people looked up to her, because by idolizing her they believed that they too could somehow overcome their poverty."

This maybe true for some but for me, it's not exactly the case. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Any inspiration to make ourselves better is always positive. But Ate Guy provided the diversion, spark and excitement to my seemingly monotonous existence noong kabataan at nag-aaral pa ako. Hala! Hmp! kainis, nasandok pa ng iba pero ganun talaga not meant to be sila. At si Ate Guy, namayagpag pa rin (Thank God!). Nakipagbalikan pa sa kanyang first love (never dies! sabi nga nila).

Ngeh! No way!

Ewan ko ba, up to now I still can't explain why I got drawn to Nora. Lalo nang mahirap ma-getz ito ng iba. Kapag nga nalaman nila eh malaking HA? at ANO KA BA? ang reaksyon. May kasama pa yang taas ng kilay. Keber!

Better heard than seen, mukhang atsay daw (siempre kampi tayo sa naaapi). As if naman na magaganda ang mga namimintas na yan. Hmp! At mainggit ba (May gayuma kaya sya?).

Nararamdaman. Parang hindi umaarte. Pano nya nagawa yun? Magic kaya o himala? O talagang natural ang galing. Pilipino man o banyaga ay humahanga.

My Only National Artist!

Haay, at magtaka pa ba kung bakit ako naging Noranian?

Maraming salamat Ate Guy at maligayang bati sa iyong ika-60 kaarawan!

Dasal namin ang iyong mabuting kalagayan at mapayapang kaisipan. God Bless..

My Lola Noranian

My Lola's sister. She's 94 now. Di na nakakalakad but Thank God, maayos pa syang kausap. Nearly 5 years ago when I last saw her and I was soo glad to see her again. 9 yrs old lang ako noon. First time ko makakakita ng sandamakmak na tao. I wish I could have spent more time with my Lola. I'm sure hindi kami mauubusan. Di bale, pagbalik ko ulit. Sana, andyan pa rin sya, naghihintay.

I love you my Lola and Thank you so much sa iyong "Nora" pamana.

Two concerts and One song

...And the world is like an apple/  Whirling silently in space/  Like the circles that you find/
In the WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND.

Haunted by the lyrics and melody of this song again. I really like Nora Aunor's interpretation the best.  She sang it in her HANDOG (1991) and GOLD (2003) concerts, both held in Araneta.

Arrangement- wise I like the HANDOG version with the slow beat and guitar instrumental.

The GOLD version had faster beat on keyboard.

Singing-wise, I cannot fault both versions.  In HANDOG, it was consistently slow and dramatic with a fuller and huskier voice while in GOLD, it was snappy with dramatic high note at the end, the voice a bit thinner but more refined.  In both versions, there were some similar emotional slicing of lyrics and accentuation of notes.  Twelve years apart... the same intensity and heartfelt rendition was unmistakably there.

Ate Guy said that this is one of her favorite songs and I don't wonder why.  The song's lyrics tell the state of one's mind when thoughts run in circles, which mostly happens after an unfortunate event or during random recollection of persistent memories one would rather forget.  Ate Guy must have experienced this not just a few times.  Will the windmills of her mind ever stop revolving?  Probably not but hopefully soon, the torture will ease out and calm ripples will be left behind. For this, I pray. God Bless, Ate Guy!

All the best in Venice, Ate Guy!

Nora Aunor, the actress does not act. She becomes her character.
She transforms. Like water..

Be formless, shapeless, like water. Now you put water into a cup it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle, you put water into a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash, be water my friend... - Bruce Lee

A Special Day to Remember

It’s been two years since but I will always remember the day like it was yesterday. There she was in flesh and blood.. so human, so close and yet.. so unreal I could swear it was a dream.
Sweet memory.. it never fails, the heart opens with a smile..

a fondest wish.. a fervent prayer..

August 21 - My NA (Nora Aunor) Day

August 21..

Halo-halong excitement, saya, lungkot, nerbyos at takot. Dali-dali akong naligo at nagbihis.

Hala! Diyos ko! At sya na nga! Wala akong nasabi kundi "Ate Guy?" Nagulat ako at parang natulala.

It's my NA (Nora Aunor) day!

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the most deserving National Artist of them all?

Nora Aunor stirs a controversial topic yet again, amazingly without her own effort. Just the mention of her name awakens the brilliant and the shallow minds. A lawmaker filed a house resolution urging the President, CCP and NCCA to confer on her the National Artist award. Great! As a Nora Aunor believer, I was ecstatic to hear the news. Thankful too for the independent and unbiased recommendation. After all, I never heard nor read Rep. Anthony Golez rave about Nora Aunor before. For him to stood ground and acknowledged Nora Aunor's immense contributions on Philippine Arts, I wholeheartedly appreciate that.

Then happy news turned sour. It's politics, what can I say? Another lawmaker followed suit and urged to name Vilma Santos as National Artist as well. Vilma Santos' senator husband also personally endorsed his wife. Unbelievable! Have we got any more decency left in the Senate? Celebrity lawmakers who don't know any better about the magnitude of this award threw their 2 cents worth to include more artists in the list. Mr. Dolphy should get the award first, they clamored. By virtue of seniority? Oh please! Give the man due respect. Enough of the paawa epek. Dolphy will most certainly not appreciate that. He has valuable contribution to Philippine entertainment, nominate him for his own merit and not his age, for bloody goodness' sake! Why only now express support for him when there are many opportunities  to do that many years in the past? Is it because he is now older or because better it's him or any one else huwag lang si Nora Aunor? Truth to tell, Nora Aunor already surpassed the qualifications for this award (Care to read the criteria, you great pretenders?) Nora earned it many years before too but people who are quick to make judgment as if they themselves are holy always attack and discredit her accomplishments on personal grounds. Previous National Artists are no Saints either so why pick on Nora Aunor? Mind boggling and utterly disgusting! I say Holy crap!

What is happening now is a diversion from the true essence of the award which is an injustice. The National Artist award is not like a queue for a government agency service where there maybe preferential treatment for the elderly, jumping on the queue if you have the right inside connection or tagging along in the queue with someone who did all the hard work to be next in line and has the appropriate documentation to get through the line, fair and square.

The National Artist title is very prestigious. Good enough artists are not good enough for it. No one should get it by vote of popularity, by seniority, by seemingly nice image or just because you are a rival of someone who you know is most deserving than anyone. Only extraordinary and legendary artists deserve the title.

These are the guidelines (in summary). Enough of politics! Let objectivity rule! May the most deserving National Artist receive the award. So help us God..

1) Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country;
Cultural icon. Nora Aunor Rating: *****

2) Filipino artistic accomplishment at its highest level and to promote creative expression as significant to the development of a national cultural identity; and
Multi-awarded singer and actress, acclaimed films of true Filipino genre. Nora Aunor Rating: *****

3) Filipino artists who have dedicated their lives to their works to forge new paths and directions for future generations of Filipino artists.
Trend-setter.. risk taker. A world-class artist. Nora Aunor Rating: *****

My National Artist
(Reposting a previous article - written and posted October 2009)

Film

It was 1972. Back then as a 9-year old, I couldn’t care less. I watched Nora Aunor movies with my Lola and whether Nora was playing cutesy or serious roles, I enjoyed them regardless. I remember watching And God Smiled at Me that year. It must be fate. The year that Nora Aunor embarked on a serious dramatic role and won her first acting award was the same year that the National Artist award was created.

In the following year, Nora Aunor was not just the singer and the actress but also the movie producer. Her own NV Productions made three movies: Carmela, Paru-parong Itim and Super Gee. She was 20 years old. Her contemporaries did not have the same mindset (and talent). So young (so ambitious?) but already dead serious as to what she wanted to become. Very early on, she realized that for her to grow as an artist, she had to be in control. As well, her audience deserved much better films.

So in between those light “audience-friendly” movie projects, risky attempts for non-musical, more dramatic, quality-made films would emerge. Eventually, her audience acknowledged her refined acting talent. I did too. Nora learned to make better films, I learned to appreciate them. She is a Filipino, with typical Filipino looks and she portrays Filipino. When I watch her, I embrace and understand Filipino. Banaue, Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo and Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, I watched these films intensely. I was quiet the whole time, afraid to blink even for a second as not to miss an arresting acting moment performed through perfect dialog delivery, minimal gestures, simple body movements, facial expression and those round eyes that speak a thousand words. Then came Bona and Himala. Even foreign audience took notice and they were in awe. There was no doubt in the world what Nora Aunor is capable of.

Nora did not just get better at acting. She showed mastery of the craft. When most popular actors were used to physical and “loud” acting, Nora did the opposite. In-depth “silent” acting became her signature style, the type that only a few artists can pull off with utmost credibility. When Nora did it, it looked natural and effortless and yet, totally affecting. One doesn’t see Nora Aunor in her films, you see her character instead and at times … you see a piece of your own self.

Music

Nora was first and foremost a singer. After all, that’s where everything started. I grew up hearing Nora’s old songs but only later when I got to really listen to them. Perhaps back then I was not paying much attention to her early ballads. As a child, the catchy familiar tunes of Pearly Shells, Kusinera, Darling etc. amused me more. It was not difficult to sing along with these songs too.

Week after week and almost two decades of viewing the Superstar show got me hooked to Nora’s singing. In her show, I have listened and watched Nora interpret varied songs. Kundiman and Pinoy folk (in both Pilipino and regional dialects), English, pop, Manila sound, jazzy, novelty, her own movie theme songs, even rock … you name it, she sung it. Of course singing ballads had to be where she excelled the most. She would sing them all from the heart. I remember listening to her “Kapantay ay Langit” version which haunted me for days. I watched her sing “What Now My Love?” in one of the film award ceremonies and I was floored. It was an electrically charged performance, hair-raising to say the least. Never seen and experienced anything like that before.

Nora’s golden unique voice is a given but it didn’t just rest there. She used her voice to touch people’s hearts. She does not just sing the song, she performs it. Much like her acting, her singing would bring out the right emotion that stays with you long after the music has ended. It is just good natured, pure, beautiful music. She does not even have to reach a single high note.

Years had passed. The raw and pure voice has matured, huskier but more full bodied. With age and experience, the song interpretation only gets better. But old songs still take a grasp, portal of sweet memories, not to let go and always … will be remembered.

The Artist

Pioneering and excellent acting skill, heartfelt and soothing music, extraordinary talent which is highly regarded by peers and critics, impressive and unparalleled body of work, local and international awards and recognitions, but most of all, an artist and artistry that created a deep-seated impact on the film and music industry, on Philippine culture and the Philippines, as a whole. With all these sparkling achievements and qualifications, pardon me if I have to ask: Are these not enough for someone to be named National Artist? Or could it be that she has overly exceeded the set criteria? By the way, she was also a record-breaking concert performer and a standout theatre actor, a complete multimedia artist.

More controversies hound the National Artist choices this year and Nora Aunor missed out again. Many have expressed despair and disappointment about the alleged undeserving winners and mistrust of the deliberation and selection process. Sadly though, people in the know refused to listen and to continue with the argument seems a lost cause. In any case, it was heartwarming to know that when a more deserving winner is mentioned by the disgruntled (but nonetheless) respectable artists and writers, the name Nora Aunor would always make the first cut. Not that there is a need for any more revalidation or proof. No sitting on the fence for me when it comes to Nora’s talent and artistry. No ifs and buts … just true excellence!

I doubt it that the Office of the President has watched many films and listened to a variety of music, yet it has the ultimate power to confer a National Artist for Film and Music. I am no President. I am just an ordinary citizen and definitely not an art connoisseur. But I watch good films and listen to beautiful music and I’d like to say that my own journey of appreciation for film and music was greatly influenced by one artist. That artist is Nora Aunor, my National Artist.

I will wait patiently for the official conferment of her National Artist award but if this does not happen in her lifetime or mine, it barely matters as I have long considered it DONE anyway.

In the truest sense of the title, Nora Aunor is already one National Artist.

Nora Aunor (NA) is National Artist (NA). The acronym suits perfectly.

N.B. For 42 years, you have given us a legacy of films and music that will not be forgotten. Thank you, Ms. Nora Aunor.
